Challenges/Situation

  • Lack of role models – role models are school dropouts who have engaged in crime.
  • Parents have neglected their roles - Parents in the district are busy making wealth such that they are not interested in their children’s education and welfare. Also parents take their children to recreation places. E.g. bars
  • Youth with low ability in academic are neglected.
  • Talents not recognized or appreciated for development e.g. sports, music, dance
  • More alcoholic parents in kikuyu district –drinking with their sons
  • Availability of drugs and alcohol-cheap and affordable (50%already addicted)
  • No cultural identity - creation of community elders to restore community role in parenting
  • No legacy from those who are educated
  • No future projection on employment creation e.g. Asians, Indians prepare their children when still young.
  • Lack of access to funds due to bureaucratic procedures
  • Negative media influence e.g. pornographic materials in our centres
  • Too many bars/pubs selling drugs and alcohol-community should say ‘NO’ (community elders to ensure that drinking points are reduced.)
  • Lack of rehabilitation centres and services.
